The scene opens as Lucky gives Nikolas the wedding rings...
Lucky: OK, Mr.
Best Man. You're the Keeper of the Rings.
Nikolas: With
my life. Now, I don't know if this counts for
anything, but this is probably the best decision
you've ever made in your whole life.
Lucky: It
counts for a lot.
Nikolas: Yeah.
Lucky: I mean,
who would have thought all those years ago we would
be here like this?
Nikolas: Yeah.
Well, we grew up, huh?
Lucky: You're
not just my Best Man. You're the best brother I
could have ever asked for.
Nikolas:
Thanks, man.
Lucky: Yeah,
I'll be in there in a minute.
Luke: If you
want to make a quick getaway, I kept the motor
running.
Lucky:
[Smiling] I'm talking to Mom. Go ahead, tell me what
a fool I am.
Luke: I talk
to her all the time. [Lucky looks at Luke,
surprised] I had a nice long conversation with her
before I drove over here. She told me my only son is
getting married today and I'd better be there.
Lucky: [Sighs,
turning away] I want you to be here, dad. But only
if you'll be happy for me.
Luke: Happy?
Well, I know what it's like to love a woman so much
that the very thought of her makes your heart ache.
I'm happy for you, cowboy. I'm also terrified, for
both of you, because when love crashes, [Looks to
the sky] your whole life can go up in flames.
Lucky: [Also
looking to the sky] It won't be like that with me
and Elizabeth.
Luke: I hope
not. I hope you're together for the rest of your
lives and in love. Your mother and I didn't get
that. But what we had was more than I had a right to
hope for. And it will last me til the end.
Lucky:
[Looking at Luke] Why are you so bitter? [Luke turns
to Lucky] Why do you shut out everyone who tries to
love you?
Luke: I don't
know. [Lucky turns away, exasperated] You know, it
wasn't long ago that I sat next to your hospital bed
and begged you to fight for your life. You had the
good sense to listen to me. So I hope you listen now
when I tell you that you got to continue to fight.
Fight for your life and your love, because that's
all you have.
Lucky:
[Looking at Luke] Elizabeth is the most important
person in my life.
Luke:
[Smiling] I know. I can see it.
Lucky:
[Nodding and turning back to look at the sky] I'm
glad you see it, too.
Luke: But, you
know, what I think doesn't mean spit. [Lucky looks
at Luke, surprised] All that's important here is
that you know your own heart and you find your own
happiness. I love you.
Lucky: I love
you. |
